Castlevania Timeline: Where Belmont's Curse Fits in Chronological Order

Castlevania: Belmont's Curse takes place in 1499 on the series' original timeline, 23 years after Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse (1476) and 20 years after Castlevania: Curse of Darkness (1479), placing it right after the Trevor Belmont era and long before Simon Belmont's adventures.

Belmont's Curse on the timeline

Castlevania's original timeline follows the Belmont clan of vampire hunters and their centuries-long war with Count Dracula, who returns every hundred years or so. Belmont's Curse adds a new chapter in the 15th century: Trevor Belmont, who defeated Dracula in 1476, is now a veteran, and his daughter Rose Belmont takes up the Vampire Killer whip in Paris in 1499. Konami's own character profile ties the dates together: Dracula was defeated by Trevor and his companions, temporarily resurrected three years later, and “twenty years later” darkness stirs again in Paris.

The game sits on the original timeline, not the Lords of Shadow reboot, and Wikipedia calls it the first traditional 2D entry on that timeline since Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia in 2008.

Release order versus story order

The series has never been released in story order. The first Castlevania arrived on the Famicom Disk System in 1986 and is set in the late 17th century; the chronologically first game, Lament of Innocence, did not appear until 2003. Belmont's Curse continues that habit: released for the series' 40th anniversary in 2026, it slots in between games that came out in 1989 and 2005, more than five centuries of story time before Aria of Sorrow's 2035.

That placement is deliberate. By setting the game a generation after Dracula's Curse, Konami can bring back Trevor and the memory of Sypha while handing the whip to a new hero, which is exactly the role Rose plays.

The Trevor Belmont era: 1476 to 1499

  1. Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse. Dracula ravages Europe with an army of monsters; Trevor Belmont defeats him with allies including Sypha Belnades, whom he marries, and Dracula's son Alucard.

  2. Castlevania: Curse of Darkness. Three years later, Dracula's curse still ravages the European countryside. Hector, a Devil Forgemaster who once served Dracula, hunts his rival Isaac, and Trevor appears, distrusting Hector. Konami's profile says Dracula temporarily resurrected, proving his soul indestructible.

  3. Shortly after Rose's birth

Sypha falls victim to Dracula's curse and dies; Rose inherits the curse in her right arm, according to Konami.

  4. Castlevania: Belmont's Curse. Dracula's castle manifests in Paris; Trevor and Rose answer the bishop's call, and Isaac, whose history with Trevor dates back 20 years, returns.

The return of Isaac, voiced again by Liam O'Brien from Curse of Darkness, is the clearest sign that Belmont's Curse is written as a follow-up to both 1476 and 1479, not only to Dracula's Curse. The story page covers how these threads set up the game without spoiling it.

How the bloodlines connect

Rose is notable because she carries two of the series' great bloodlines at once. The Belmonts pass the Vampire Killer down the generations: Wikipedia's articles describe Juste Belmont, the hero of Harmony of Dissonance, as Simon's grandson, and the whip later passes to John Morris, a distant descendant of the Belmonts, in Bloodlines, whose son Jonathan Morris stars in Portrait of Ruin. The Belnades line continues too, through later playable descendants such as Carrie Fernandez and Yoko Belnades.

Trevor and Sypha's marriage at the end of Dracula's Curse is the point where those two families join, and Belmont's Curse is the first game led by their daughter. Her mix of the Belmont whip and the tarot cards inherited from her magic-wielding mother echoes that double heritage.

What is not on this timeline

  • Lords of Shadow. Castlevania: Lords of Shadow (2010) rebooted the series with Gabriel Belmont, followed by Mirror of Fate and Lords of Shadow 2, which is set in modern times. It is a separate continuity.
  • Games removed from the chronology. In 2002, Koji Igarashi removed Castlevania Legends, Circle of the Moon, Castlevania (1999) and Legacy of Darkness from the official chronology. A 2006 timeline poster re-included all except Legends, and Igarashi has called them a “subseries”.
  • The animated series. Netflix's Castlevania (2017–2021) adapted Dracula's Curse, and Castlevania: Nocturne follows Richter Belmont during the French Revolution in 1792. Belmont's Curse brings back two of the show's voice actors, but shared continuity is not confirmed as of 2026-10-14.

What to play before Belmont's Curse

None of these is required, but each adds context:

  • Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse (1989) for Trevor and Sypha's story and how the Belmont and Belnades lines joined.
  • Castlevania: Curse of Darkness (2005) for Isaac, the devil forgemaster with a 20-year grudge against Trevor.
  • Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (1997) for the closest gameplay ancestor: Belmont's Curse follows its non-linear, RPG-flavoured exploration.
  • The Netflix Castlevania series if you enjoy the voices of Sypha and Dracula, which return here.

Availability of older games changes over time, so check current storefronts and collections. If you only have time for one thing, play the free Belmont's Curse demo: it opens with the Paris setup and explains the family history in a few minutes. Meet the returning and new faces on the characters page.

Why 1499 matters

Dracula's return cycle is the series' heartbeat, and Belmont's Curse happens inside an unusually short gap: Dracula fell in 1476, rose briefly in 1479, and the threat stirs again only 20 years later. That compressed history explains why Trevor is still alive to mentor Rose, why Sypha's death is recent enough to hurt, and why Konami frames the game as the growth of a new Belmont rather than the arrival of a distant descendant.
